Author’s Biography

When the Student is Ready the Master Appears Buddhist Proverb

My name is Wayne Michael; I write and draw comics. I am also a Martial Arts instructor and love what it teaches children.

I’ve been practising Martial Arts for forty years now, but inside, I’m still that wide-eyed boy in 1970, that happen upon a copy of ‘Jiu Jitsu Complete’ by Kiyose Nakae and Charles Yeager. The book was perfect for that 11-year-old lad who loved to read comics. Every technique was illustrated in pen and ink diagrams, the standard format for comic art, and the ‘escape tricks’ were explained with comic book type captions. I was hooked. I practiced some of the techniques on my reluctant siblings, which worked painfully well. In time I realised, to master the art, I would need a teacher. Now, where do I find one?

Nobody I knew had heard of Jiu Jitsu in those days. The word ‘Karate’ may have been whispered among the initiated but I didn’t know any one who taught it. Being an East Ender, there were boxing clubs on every corner. I joined the nearest one and they had me on trial for a month to see if I had ‘the right stuff’ to be a fighter. To my mother’s chagrin, I did, and became a good competitive boxer. Dad didn’t mind, because boxing kept me off the streets.

Chinese Martial Art movies soon swept Britain, however, I was too young to see them because they were rated ‘X’. Nevertheless, I had a plan. Wearing 1970’s six inch platform shoes, a long overcoat to hide them and black shoe polish to fake a moustache, my older brother and I managed to walk, without notice, by the cinema usher and in to see the film. The movie I saw starred Bruce Lee in ‘Fist of Fury’. I was blown away. I wanted to learn Kung Fu.

Martial Art Without Philosophy is Street Fighting Master Jhoon Rhee

My mum grudgingly approved of my interest in Martial Arts because she saw the intellectual and moral benefits they inspired. She loved reciting Proverbs from the Bible and when she saw quotes of wisdom pinned all over my bedroom wall, her view on Martial Arts changed. Unknown to her, most were the thoughts of Bruce Lee, who was a University Graduate in Philosophy. His words motivated me to train and study.

Clubs sprung up all over Britain and I became exposed to many different styles and systems. I studied Karate, Kung Fu, Jiu Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do and continued Boxing. Eventually, in 1997, I opened a full time school where I teach a blend of styles I love.

  Eagle Eyed

During the 60’s and 70’s, I read comics. Britain’s premier comic book was ‘Eagle’. The Founder was Reverend Marcus Morris, an Anglican vicar who was disillusioned with children’s literature. He wanted to produce a publication that taught children about morals and problem solving through the medium of comics.

American comic readers may be familiar with the Eagle Awards. It is the most prestigious prize in the industry. Marvel’s ‘X Men’ won it several times during the late 70’s and early 80’s. I believe in Reverend Marcus Morris’ concept of education through entertainment, because it’s the best way children learn. Now, how can I do the same for Martial Arts?

Creation of Black Belt High Comic Book

Prior to opening my Martial Art school, my professional background was in Commercial Art and journalism. I wanted to produce a newsletter for my club, so with Eagle Comics in mind, I created ‘Black Belt High’ a Martial Art School with pupils who had similar characteristics to my own students.

Parents who bring their children to my school, want me to make their child more confident, respectful, disciplined and of course to learn how to defend themselves. I reflect these many benefits of Martial Arts through the comic stories. The students and parents at my club loved my stories. So I thought I’d repackage them into an Amazon Kindle format to widen my audience. Black Belt High may never win an Eagle Award, but I’ll try to capture some of the spirit of Reverend Marcus Morris.

NB:If you are a Martial Arts Instructor, please make your younger students or their parents aware of these Kindle Book Series. They promote the positive benefits found in Martial Art schools. Don’t worry; I will never promote any style or system over another. I will only use the term ‘Martial Art’ because that is what we all teach, whether it’s Kung Fu, Karate, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Kick Boxing or MMA.
